Council oks $36 million 2026 budget with tax increase

NJ JEFFERSON — Jefferson Council adopts $36.04 million 2026 budget with 4.48 percent tax levy increase. The spending plan, approved unanimously by Council President Kalish and Councilmembers Schultz and Senatore (Councilman Birmingham and Vice President Garruto absent), allocates $25.52 million for municipal operations, including $105.19 per household for general services and $22.94 for garbage collection. Business Administrator Debi Millikin attributed cost increases to employee health and pensions, public safety, liability insurance, and a state-mandated property revaluation; the mayor noted seven-year budget growth of 25.7 percent tracks closely with inflation.
The council also adopted an Ordinance establishing a public recreational bathing license ($150 annually) and authorized $250,000 in local funding for a $1 million wastewater collection system design with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
